Writers who Were in the Ad Business First
While it might seem like selling out, advertising can also be a great training ground when it comes to storytelling craft.
(In fact, a few years back, when I was looking to leave the ad business and jump into an MFA program, I noticed at least one prominent MFA program that offered classes in How to Succeed in Advertising. I guess the grass is always greener.)
As Salman Rushdie said about the writing habits he gained as a copywriter:
"I now write exactly like that. I write like a job. I sit down in the morning and I do it. And I don't miss deadlines. I do feel that a lot of the professional craft of writing is something I learnt from those years in advertising and I'll always be grateful for it."
