Total Fanboy Moment
On a day which had definitely had its ups and downs, I got to meet a writer and teacher whose work I really admire, Rob Bell. It was a super hot day with massive train delays, and it took me 2 1/2 hours of waiting for a stalled train that never came, taking the wrong train deliberately to overshoot and work my way back, then getting stuck in a tunnel in Brooklyn, then running for a cab just to get here a half hour late--no stop for dinner--but I waited dutifully in the book signing line, tummy grumbling and overheated--to shake hands, tell him an anecdote about how my wife and I went to see his first speaking tour in NYC 11 years ago, and he signed a copy of his new book. I know this is one of those totally self-referential internet moments of validating my experience by posting a photo--and who these days doesn't find themselves in an important moment thinking, I'm going to post a picture of this on all my social media--but it's also one of those rare moments when I get a little fanboy about a public figure. I'm already several chapters into the new book and can't put it down. Rob Bell is the first writer who showed me you can create a successful book out of talking with people about your belief, the way you would with your friends. Great inspiration!
